Borrowing From the Theatre

2020, video.

Over lockdown performance scores have increased in significance seeping into our homes and government instructions, and in my practice developing from purely preparatory to objects to be shared, underpinning my performances and speaking directly to the viewer. Previously in exhibitions, I have noticed viewers mirror my choreographic performances while watching, leading me to wonder whether choreography could be contagious like laughter, and prompting me to consciously extend the participation that underpins my practice to the public realm.

Echoing the proscenium arch, and engaging with pre-performance ritual and written stage directions, I now use choreographic scores as an invitation for unseen collectivity.
